Living in Japan and dreaming of cycling in Italy? Cicloposse Japan, based in Okayama, is the Japan-side partner of Cicloposse Italia. Contact us to start planning your tour.

Riding freely and enjoying the landscapes and culture at your own pace is what makes it special. But how should you prepare? What should you watch out for? To answer those questions, here are our 5 tips for enjoying a bike trip in Italy.

1. Choose the right bike

A comfortable trip starts with the right bike. Gravel, road or e-bike: choose according to the route. A reliable tour operator will suggest the model that suits you.

2. Go beyond the classic routes

On a self-guided tour, choose roads with fewer tourists and discover the real Italy. Small villages, cypress avenues, open countryside: moments you won't find in any guidebook.

3. Go local

Connecting with an operator who knows the area inside out gives you special experiences, from food tips to the best places to stop. That local touch makes the trip richer.

4. Choose stays for their atmosphere

Look for warmth rather than stars. Family-run agriturismi and historic borghi offer true Italian hospitality.

5. Travel to taste

Italy is a country of great food. Don't just ride: take time for local dishes, wine and espresso. Add a cooking class or a winery tour and your memories will be even richer.

Renting a bike in Italy

Cicloposse offers five types of bike: gravel, e-bike, e-gravel, road and hybrid. Bike rental is not included in the tour price, and you choose your bike when you book.

Tell us your height, fitness, cycling experience and the tour you're joining, and we'll suggest the right model and size. Bikes fit riders from about 150 to 195 cm (depending on the model), and we also do a professional bike fitting. Please note that road bikes can't be used on gravel tours.

You'll find details on each bike on our bike lineup page.

Equipment included with your rental bike

  • Helmet: a model from the Italian brand MET

  • Bags: handlebar bag and rear rack bag

  • Lock, frame pump and a saddle bag with a puncture repair kit

  • Rear light

  • Smartphone mount: for navigation with the RideWithGPS app

Standard pedals are flat or with toe clips. SPD and Look Keo pedals are also available in limited numbers. You're welcome to bring your own saddle (without seatpost), pedals and shoes.

Packing for your trip

You'll find everything to pack on our packing list page. Use it to get ready before you leave.

Best seasons: spring and autumn! With mild weather and beautiful scenery, spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are perfect for a bike trip. Mornings and evenings are cool and the days are not too hot. In spring the days are very long, too. We don't run tours in July and August, when the heat is too intense.

One last word: self-guided touring is all about freedom and discovery. Why not start pedalling and find your own Italy?
